What is this? debsliverlovers is a fandom auction to benefit Deb Mensinger and her wife, Laurie J. Marks (author of the Elemental Logic series, the Children of the Triad series, The Watcher's Mask, and Dancing Jack, and guest of honor at WisCon 31). Bidding begins on Saturday, May 1, 2010, at 12:01 am Eastern Daylight Savings Time, and closes on Sunday, May 23, 2010, 11:59 pm Eastern DST. Bidding is CLOSED! Thank you all SO MUCH!
What's the cause? This auction is to raise money for the medical and incidental expenses related to Deb Mensinger's liver transplant. Deb and Laurie will have a number of expenses that are not covered by insurance, including the costs related to getting the potential live donor to Massachusetts for testing and, if all goes well, the surgery.
Deb has been disabled for several years by a genetic form of porphyria. Over time, porphyria destroys the liver, and Deb has now reached a point where she requires a liver transplant to survive.
We all know how difficult it is to get an organ transplant, and how long the lists are. However, there is a spot of hope in this: Deb's brother is willing to be a live donor. If he passes all the tests, genetic and otherwise, the hope is that the two of them would go into surgery simultaneously, and surgeons would remove a lobe of his liver and transplant it to Deb. In 6-8 weeks, both livers would regenerate into full, functioning livers, and Deb will never have porphyria again.
There are a lot of obstacles to this, not least of which being her brother's limited means and lack of insurance and living on the opposite coast. In the best of all possible worlds, we're hoping that a fandom auction will help raise money to bring her brother and his spouse to the East Coast a first time, for testing, and a second time, for the surgery. If we're very fortunate, the auction can help with test costs, the cost of putting up his spouse at a local hotel while he's recovering from surgery, and such related items that transplant-related grants and insurance won't pay for.
This auction is to raise money for as much of the combined medical and related expenses as we can.
Some details have been left out for reasons of privacy. Please do not contact Deb or Laurie to inform them of government assistance programs. We are working on that and other fundraising angles.
How can I help? You can bid on fanfic, original fic, vids, cookies, memorabilia, critique/betas, and much more! Or you can offer items or your skills/services as a writer, vidder, baker, knitter, or whatever else you'd like.
How do I bid?
1. The tag lists at the right of the main page, also to be found here, list everyone who is offering under "seller," the types of services and items under "offered," and the fandoms sorted by media (tv, movie, etc.)
2. Comment to an offered post with the amount of money (USD for consistency) you wish to bid, plus what you're bidding on if more than one service or item is offered. If someone else raises the bid in a reply to your comment, bid again by replying to their reply with a higher offer. In other words, keep the replies to a single thread so that people will know when they've been outbid. This will continue until the auction closes and the highest bid wins.
3. There is also a "buy now" option. "Buy now" can be exercised with ONLY the first bid on an auction; once bidding has commenced, you cannot exercise "Buy It Now." Once "Buy It Now" has been exercised, further bidding will not be allowed.
4. Bidding must be done in public, which means on the Livejournal auction post. Emailed bids directly to the auctioneers will NOT be timestamped until someone (the auctioneer) makes a comment with the bid on the LJ post itself (this rule goes active now). To assure yourself of a timely bid, place it yourself as an LJ comment on the auction you are interested in.
Note: If bidding on food, you should probably be in the continental USA or be aware of customs regulations regarding food shipments to your location.
How do I pay? Make your donation to WomanEarthandSpirit AT gmail DOT comEstrogenerationInc AT gmail DOT com via Paypal and PLEASE mark it "For Deb Mensinger" (or "For Deb's Liver" or any similar identifier) in the message box. Woman, Earth & Spirit is a nonprofit organization that works to expand possibilities for women and lesbians, and also sponsors Outland, Maize: A Lesbian Country Magazine, and the New Mexico Women's Guest House, Retreat & Healing Center. ETA: Estrogeneration is a related nonprofit, run by the same women. They have kindly agreed to umbrella the donations to help us avoid difficulties in handling the monies. Since they are a 501c3 nonprofit corporation organization, your donations will be tax deductible as well. Woman, Earth & Spirit will transfer the money to Laurie and Deb after the auction is closed and a majority of donations have been collected.
Once you have sent your donation, comment to the post you bid on to confirm it. This way, we will be able to add up donations and let you all know how much money was raised.
Please forward a screenshot (or, if you get one, email notification) of your payment receipt to the seller when you have completed your donation so they'll know when to mail their item (or work on their deliverable).
!!NOTE!! ON PAYING: Please send the money via Paypal by means of a bank transfer, eCheck, or PayPal balance, because then there are no processing fees and no limits. We strongly discourage people from paying via Paypal by credit card.
On the "Review your payment and send" screen (which I got to by "Send Money," putting in your address & the amount, and choosing "Personal" and "Gift"), you should see "Payment Method" in the middle of the screen. You can change it there if necessary. "Instant Transfer from [your bank account]" is fine, as is "eCheck" or "PayPal balance."
It should default to Instant Transfer if you have a bank account with PayPal already.
How do we contact each other after a winning auction?
Winning bidder: Please reply to the original post with contact info. To preserve your privacy, you may delete the post after it's made. Sellers: Please turn on comment notifications until you have heard from your bidder. If this doesn't work for you, please contact the mods and we will put you in touch with the relevant parties.
How do I offer an item or service? 1. Join the community via the user info page.
2. Make a properly tagged and headlined post. You can find the list of tags here. Please check the format of the tags before making up your own. Standardized tags help people find your offer.
3. Tags must include your name (a pseudonym or LJ handle is fine), what you're offering (eg, fic, vids, baked goods), and what fandoms you're offering (if relevant).
These tags must be standardized as much as possible so bidders will easily be able to search for what they want. Please write your tags as set below. That is, tag as "fanfic," not "fic."
Tags for offerings must be as follows: offered: fanfic, offered: original fic, offered: interactive fiction, offered: roleplaying games, offered: vid, offered: food, offered: fanart, offered: original art, offered: clothing, offered: jewelry, offered: critique, offered: poetry, offered: music, offered: misc items, offered: misc services. Check the tag list for the most up-to-date version. I'll try to keep this up-to-date, but may lag.
For simplicity, we are going with a simpler fandom tagging format, eg, "fandom: buffy the vampire slayer" or "fandom: swordspoint" or "fandom: xxxholic." If in doubt, check the existing tag list as a guideline. I will do my best to go through and clean up tags, so just do your best. Bidders should always check post details.
Please forgive our limitations and do your best with the tag system.
Headline: Offered: Fanfic
Offer: I will write fanfic of no less than 1000 words in the following fandoms: Utena, Stargate Atlantis, or Final Fantasy VIII. I don't do graphic pron, but am comfortable writing gen or shippy, as you wish. I am also probably willing to write in any fandom I'm familiar with, but email me first if you want to make a special request.
Contact: My email is in my user info.
Delivery: I will have your story written by October 1.
What if I don't have an LJ account? You can still bid by manually signing your name and some sort of contact info. Selling will be more difficult. If you don't want to get a free LJ account for this purpose, please email the mods and we'll figure something out.
I have a question, suggestion, or complaint. Please contact the mod, heavenscalyx, through LJ messaging or email: dziwozony AT gmail DOT com.
Note: Format of this auction cribbed from care_faith_hope, and therefore intense gratitude is extended to the organizers thereof.
